Our client, a municipal government agency, had access rights to a federally-controlled database containing identifier information such as names, addresses and social security numbers for hundreds of local citizens. In conducting an internal investigation on behalf of the agency, The Intelligence Group identified an instance in which an unauthorized employee accessed the database and downloaded several reports containing this personal identifier information. In addition to inappropriately accessing the database, we were able to document that the employee had e-mailed several copies of the report to their home e-mail address. Coupled with a background investigation revealing prior criminal history as well as current financial difficulty, this evidence was presented to federal officials, who arrested the employee on charges of identity theft.
