Publicly Available Information Warning

To our clients and friends:

With recent government warnings placing emphasis on the need to re-evaluate publicly available information on the Internet, The Intelligence Group cautions our clients and friends to re-examine the available information concerning themselves and/or their companies found in the public domain.  In that regard, we advise everyone to review all publicly available sources, including the Internet for information that could pose risk in the hands of others.  Where information is found, a determination should be made whether that information should remain in the public domain.

  • When evaluating such public information and Internet content, the following considerations should be made:

  • Does the information found in the public domain put you, your employees or the public in danger?

  • Does the information pertain to safety issues, crisis reaction strategies, etc?

  • Could this information, when coupled with other available information, form the basis of proprietary or sensitive data?  Can it provide information that will place you or your organization at risk?

  • Is any of the information found personal in nature (name, date of birth, biographical information, address, etc.)?

  • Is any of the information found operationally sensitive in nature (location of facilities, key functions, process information, etc.)?

When reviewing publicly available information, keep in mind there are many archival sites on the Internet that serve as repositories for information otherwise thought to no longer exist.  Always use extreme diligence in ferreting out every possible source of information.  Additionally, it is understood that decisions to remove information must certainly consider striking the balance between what is useful and necessary, and that which poses unnecessary risk.

The Intelligence Group can assist organizations in finding publicly available data pertaining to them and their operations, as well as assist in removal. If you have questions about an information source or you would like further information, please contact us.
